A Message from the Principal

St Michael's Primary School is a rural school that provides for the academic and spiritual growth for the children of Coolamon and surrounding districts. As a school we share a variety of new and wonderful experiences together and in each of these areas develop the guiding principles of what we want to become; spiritual, inquiring, reflective, collaborative, knowledgeable, caring and healthy global citizens.

Children have the opportunity to participate in many learning experiences as well as being exposed to assessment at State or wider levels with such opportunities as the University of NSW Exams, Basic Skills Tests and Essay writing competitions. In the sporting arena, the children are exposed to a wide variety of sports throughout the year, with opportunities to represent at Deanery, Diocesan, MacKillop and State levels.

I hope you enjoy looking at our website and the different items our school offers.

The history of St Michael's Primary School, Coolamon

In 1896 a community of three ‘Sisters of St. Joseph’ from North Goulburn were sent to Coolamon after a request from Bishop Gallagher. The School operated in a weatherboard building shared with the Church. In 1936 the current school was built catering for four classrooms. In 1977 one of the verandas was closed in to act as a Library. The School was appointed its first lay Principal in 1981 although the Sisters remained in teaching positions at the School. A portable classroom was purchased in 1990. As part of the centenary in 1996 a pergola was built over the children’s lunch area. In the year 2001 the School built a multipurpose court to cater for basketball, tennis, volleyball and netball. In 2002 the School worked on improving the grounds by adding a watering system, extra trees for shade, while extending our border gardens. In 2005 our school was extended by the addition of two new classrooms and the office was refurbished. In 2008, due to the continued growth of the school, another new classroom was built as well as a new toilet block. In 2010 a grant from the Australian Government’s BER Program allowed us to refurbish all classrooms, install Interactive Whiteboards in all rooms, build a new library and multipurpose hall, construct a COLA over our basketball court which was also resurfaced and build a large covered outdoor learning area. In 2010 we also installed Solar Panels for the generation of “green” electricity as well as a number of rainwater collection tanks around the school.  In 2013 we received a $30 000 grant, under the National Solar Schools Program, to install water tanks and connect the school toilets to these water tanks.
